How I prepared for my first job with an Internship

I had just finished off with my second year of graduation, when my elder brother told me to buckle up for a job. It is because, I have always been that kind of a person, who wants to have fun and completes his assignments just one night before the submission. In short, I have never been the sincere type and the thought of sincerity and responsibilities scared me. But, when I gave a thought to what my brother had said earlier, I got coupled further into a series of thoughts, which made me realise that now was the time to take up a few responsibilities. Hence, I asked my brother to help me with the same and he suggested me to apply for internship programs to prepare myself and also to know my worth and where I stand. He briefed me about various advantages of an internship and then I realised why some juniors in our college were doing internships.

Since I had college to attend, I couldn’t do a regular internship. Therefore, I decided to apply for a summer internship. I browsed through various websites and had gone through with the internship program’s information of over thousands of companies. By the time the summer break arrived, I had given over ten interviews. It was a good feeling to be shortlisted in three out of ten interview sessions. My interviews scared me. It was as if I was being evaluated even by the way I was breathing. Finally my summer internship started and the office felt as if my mother has swept it nice and clean. The moment I entered it felt completely different and one could sense responsibility and pressure amongst the co-workers.

Though the duration of my internship was of one month, it felt like years. But I constantly made myself stronger, fighting against all odds. It made me into a better person, into one who could take up every challenge. It helped me grew into a man and I was not just some irresponsible youngster, instead a young man who was worth to give a chance. After the graduation was over, I was able to grab a job through the placement cell of our college. I would suggest every graduation student to consider internships or even a summer internship, because there is so much to learn from the industry and mentors that would prepare you for a better future, just like it did to me.

Clear the Misconceptions That You Have About Internships

The words ‘internships’ and ‘interns’ have suddenly grabbed a lot of attention amongst the youngsters. The attention has developed mainly amongst those who are currently in the college or are about to enter the college phase. Most of you have definitely heard about these terms and many of you might be thinking of applying for internships. Earlier only summer internship was popular as a ‘thing’ amongst the youngsters and on the college notice boards.   But with the passage of time, now even virtual internships and work from home internships are becoming the most preferred choices for internships. There were several misconceptions in the minds for internships and the evolution has proved them all wrong. Few misconceptions have been listed below, which you will find baseless once you have completed with your internship. You would realise that internships are fun and in fact, they are a one of its kind experience.

Internship is all about work
The ‘about work’ part of this sentence is true. It is also worth noting that internship is more than just work. Yes, you need to work hard and keep up to the expectations of the mentors and co workers. But it is actually fun when you all go out for lunch and join in for a co-workers birthday or farewell. You would realise that some of your mentors and co workers have a better sense of humour than you.

You have to give up your whole summer
Most of the students do not look for summer internship because they don’t want to ruin their summer vacations. It might just prove you wrong and in fact you can have the best of both, your vacations as well as internships, in just two months. You can apply for internships, which have duration of one or two weeks. Not all companies offer a complete two months summer internship program. You can even apply for work from home internship to avoid early morning alarms.

You get a burden of college plus office work load

It is important to note that as an intern, there might be a few things that you need to keep a check on, as it is a part of your responsibility. Unlike college, you don’t get home work or assignments during your internship. It is all about the instances at work, which help you to learn. Small things add up to your skill set, like making mental notes instead of on a notebook.

Enhance Your Resume with Internship Programs

An extended resume is always a plus point for job seekers and especially for the fresher’s, who have just finished their graduation. Resume is something that indirectly and silently defines the capability of the candidate and his personality. Therefore it is better that university students and even those students, who have just started with their graduation, form a layout of their preparations for extending the resume up to two or more pages. You won’t need to make any high end compromises with your freedom and skip the college fun and parties, you only need to take out one or two weeks from your vacations or you can work from home.

There are several websites that have information of over hundreds of companies, offering internship programs. Either you can look for a summer internship only for your summer break or you can join a virtual internship. You can extend your search amongst the websites and apply for the one that suits your profile. If you get lucky, you may even find a company, offering a stipend to their interns. Well, the candidates who are selected for the internship program after an interview or two are titled as interns. And being an intern is not an easy task, you have to take up certain responsibilities and you also have expectations to deliver.

It is easy to understand that how difficult it is for a youngster to give up vacations, may be that is the reason why few companies organise these summer Internship programs for a span of two or three weeks. Even though the duration of the internship is short, you will get to learn some little-known and significant aspects of your industry. If you join at least two internship programs during  your college vacations, you will have an experience and exposure of working in different work places and conditions. And also, you will develop a confidence to sit for your placement interview or your first job interview.

By the time you have completed your graduation, your resume will have an important section of work experience and about two to three summer internship certificates that will raise the weight of your resume. Make sure that you mention every detail of your internship and your personal experience as well. So go ahead, open your laptops and start the search for internships. And remember, it requires dedication and hard work. As they say, nothing comes easy.
